Foreskin Conditions

Foreskin conditions are a common reason for men to seek specialist urological advice. These include problems such as tight foreskin (phimosis), recurrent infections or redness, and discomfort during sexual activity.

While many foreskin issues are mild, some can cause significant symptoms, impact sexual function, or lead to recurrent infections if left untreated.

At the London Urology Collective, we provide expert assessment and management of foreskin conditions as part of a comprehensive men’s health service. Our expertise also includes erectile dysfunction, male fertility, and scrotal conditions, ensuring a joined up and holistic approach to care.

Our aim is to provide clear diagnosis, effective treatment, and long-term resolution.

Common foreskin conditions

There are several common foreskin related conditions, including:

  • Phimosis

  • Paraphimosis

  • Balanitis and balanoposthitis

  • Lichen sclerosus (also known as balanitis xerotica obliterans)

  • Recurrent infections or inflammation

  • Frenulum breve (short frenulum)

Some of these conditions may also affect sexual function and can coexist with erectile dysfunction or discomfort during sex.

Foreskin conditions and men’s health

Foreskin problems are often straightforward to treat, but persistent symptoms may indicate underlying conditions such as chronic inflammation, skin disorders, or poorly controlled diabetes.

In some cases, recurrent infections or scarring can impact quality of life, sexual function, and confidence. Early specialist assessment ensures accurate diagnosis and appropriate management, reducing the risk of long term complications.

When to Seek Specialist Advice

You may benefit from specialist assessment if you experience:

  • Tight foreskin that cannot be retracted (phimosis)

  • Pain or discomfort during erections or sexual activity

  • Recurrent infections such as balanitis (redness or inflammation of the head of the penis) or balanoposthitis ((redness or inflammation of the head and foreskin of the penis)

  • Cracking, bleeding, or scarring of the foreskin

  • Difficulty with hygiene due to a non retractile foreskin

  • A foreskin that becomes stuck or fused to the head of the penis due to inflammation and scarring

  • A foreskin that becomes stuck behind the head of the penis and cannot be pulled back (paraphimosis)

Early assessment can prevent progression of symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.
