HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate)

A modern, durable laser procedure for treating moderate to severe prostate enlargement.

HoLEP is recommended for men with significant urinary symptoms or very large prostates.
A laser is used to remove the obstructing prostate tissue completely, providing long-term relief with a low risk of bleeding. It is suitable for men on blood thinners and those with urinary retention.

What to Expect on the Day

  • Performed under general or spinal anaesthetic.

  • A telescope is passed through the urethra (no external cuts).

  • Laser energy separates and removes the enlarged prostate tissue.

  • A catheter is placed overnight to allow the bladder to drain.

  • Most men stay one night in hospital.

After the Procedure

  • Temporary burning, urgency, or blood-tinged urine is common.

  • Most men return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks.

  • Flow improves rapidly and continues to strengthen over time.

  • Erectile function is usually preserved; retrograde ejaculation is common.
