Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)

The traditional gold standard operation for relieving urinary obstruction from BPH.

TURP is offered to men with moderate to severe urinary symptoms, recurrent retention, or complications of BPH.
A heated loop removes the obstructing prostate tissue, improving urinary flow and bladder emptying.

What to Expect on the Day

  • Performed under general or spinal anaesthetic.

  • A telescope is passed through the urethra (no external incisions).

  • Prostate tissue is shaved away using an electrical loop.

  • A catheter is left in place for 1–2 days to allow the bladder to heal.

  • Most men stay 1–2 nights in hospital.

After the Procedure

  • Mild burning, urgency, or blood-tinged urine is expected for a short time.

  • Most men return to normal activities within 2 weeks.

  • Flow improves quickly and continues to settle over several weeks.

  • Erectile function is usually preserved; retrograde ejaculation is common.
